Oama Run Towel

Oama Run Flour Sack Towel

These hand printed towels exemplify the principles of slow design. Hand crafted from repurposed textile in Hawaii, they have a unique history. In the 1800’s flour was purchased in 100 pound sacks, and it was common for families to wash and reuse this cotton as kitchen towels, polishing cloths, diapers and underclothing. They were even sewn into sheets and pillowcases.

Today, Downtown General Store in Hawaii has revived this sustainable tradition. These 28” x 26” flour towels are super soft, completely lint-free, absorb like a paper towel and dry fast. They add a sparkle to dishes, glassware, and windows. Each design has been created in house, and is screen printed by hand using water based inks to maintain softness.

The Oama design is inspired by tiny fish that can be found is the thousands, swimming in the shallows off Hawaii’s beaches. The Oama, alluring and magical, might stay in a particular area for weeks on end and then vanish.
